Naomi V. Dunsen-White is a children’s book author who seeks to inspire children with messages of diversity, purpose and pursuit of their dreams. She believes that all children have a gift within them, just waiting to be discovered. It’s up to us, the adults in their lives, to help them discover it. Positive representation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) characters in children's literature is of utmost importance to Naomi. She supports and shares the work of the Children’s Cooperative Book Collective (CCBC) in its research on the lack of diversity in children’s books. Believing that every child deserves to see characters in their books who look like them, Naomi strives to make a difference by raising awareness about the need for equity in the children’s book industry.
As a former foster care specialist and educator, Naomi believes the academic and therapeutic benefits of children’s books far outweigh the entertainment value. She loves writing stories that encourage children to use their creativity, imagination, and discover their unlimited potential. Her debut book, “Johari The Great,” features an African American student, inspired by his teacher to use his imagination to write. In doing so, he discovers his greatness and the gift he has inside! This engaging story encourages reading, writing and the reward of setting and pursuing goals. Naomi focuses on vocabulary and reading comprehension as stepping stones to reading excellence, and includes worksheets in her books to enhance learning and encourage family discussion.
Naomi is also an editor, specializing in children’s and YA books. Her dream is to establish a nonprofit organization that promotes diversity and equity in literacy, and provides coaching, support and publishing assistance to independent BIPOC children’s authors, and ultimately distribute their books to communities in need. Naomi resides in Novi, Michigan.

Children's Book Author
Naomi V. Dunsen-White
This week’s Writer Wednesday is children’s book author and editor Naomi V. Dunsen-White of Novi, Michigan! Naomi currently has a Kickstarter campaign for her most recent book "Why Am I Here? A Child's Book About Purpose.” Her goal is to garner support so she can give the book to inner-city elementary school students, particularly in Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. Learn more about her and the campaign below!
What’s your upcoming children’s book about?
I have a current Kickstarter campaign for my upcoming book, “Why Am I Here? A Child’s Book About Purpose.” This book teaches children about purpose and discovering their unique path and place in this world. The illustrations are stunning, and the message is powerful. Diversity, unity and inclusion are stressed and it inspires children to ponder, dream and imagine a future that is bright, regardless of their circumstances, their background or the color of their skin.

What plans do you have for your Kickstarter campaign?
I’m so excited about my plans and dreams for this book. My Kickstarter campaign is going very well! In two days, I was awarded the coveted badge and banner and declared a Kickstarter “Project We Love.” That’s a HUGE benefit because it comes with free promotion. I believe that will be a help to my campaign. I am determined to be successful and greatly surpass my goal!
I want to give this book to inner-city students here in Michigan — Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. I feel so strongly led to do this. Ever since I wrote this book, I knew it was what I was supposed to do. This message is so meaningful and so powerful, but it’s told in a loving, encouraging way, with characters Black and Brown children can relate to. I think of children who live in challenging, disadvantaged areas where things may not look so promising. Perhaps they don’t hear a lot about hope, and maybe the future may not seem so bright.
This message is for them. I want them to know that regardless of their ZIP code, there’s a path made for their feet to follow and there are doors just waiting for them to run through! Every child has a purpose. Regardless of the obstacles that may be in their way, I want them to know and believe that they, too, can have a future that is bright.
So, I am seeking people to join me in supporting these children and helping me get this book into their hands and this message into their hearts and minds. I need people and businesses too, to partner with me and sponsor students, sponsor classrooms, so they can receive this book. I even have lesson plans for the teachers to assist them in presenting the book for learning and classroom activities. Plus, when a class is sponsored, it includes me visiting the class, reading the book to the students, having a book signing and an author Q&A chat with them. I truly want this to be a learning opportunity and a memorable experience for everyone!
What is your favorite part of the writing process?
My favorite part of the writing process is when out of nowhere, I’m inspired and the story just seems to be pouring out of me. My fingers are flying across the keyboard, my heart feels happy and full and I know that whatever the result is, this is a gift.
What does your writing workspace look like?
I write in my office, at my desk. I have a lot of family pictures in there. It’s cozy, and it’s personal. Sometimes, I like to take my laptop outside onto the deck and write while I’m listening to nature. I really enjoy that. Unfortunately, though, I may find myself distracted by the hummingbirds or deer, or feeling the breeze on my face. I don’t mind struggling through that, though.
What is your favorite non-writing hobby?
Reading is my absolute favorite thing to do. Whenever I have the chance to enjoy reading for a long stretch of time, I am very happy. Audiobooks have become precious to me because I can read/listen while I’m doing other things, like gardening or cleaning. I love that!
What is your favorite piece of writing advice?
I think my favorite piece of writing advice is to not be so critical of yourself. Just write it! Write it and allow yourself to enjoy your gift before you find everything wrong with it. I tend to be overly critical of myself, and I think a lot of creatives do that because we expect so much from ourselves. However, I am learning to give myself time to appreciate and enjoy what I have to offer, for just a little while, before I start finding fault in it. I will find it, no doubt, but I stopped rushing to do so.

Think Ahead Kids Article

Naomi V. Dunsen-White is a children's book author who loves to inspire and encourage children to use their imagination, creativity and interests to discover their potential. Naomi has a passion for promoting diversity and equity in literacy. Determined to work toward closing the diversity gap in the children’s literature industry, she uses her social media presence to promote awareness about the need for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) representation in children’s books.
Naomi is a former educator and foster care specialist and has always found fulfillment in helping and teaching children. For years, she has enjoyed tutoring children in reading and writing, and she believes reading comprehension to be one of the most critical skills for children (and adults) to master. Naomi believes that encouraging children to become excellent readers and lifelong book lovers is one of the greatest opportunities a person could have. As an author, Naomi sees using her words to speak into children’s lives as a privilege and honor, but also a great responsibility. She believes that all children have a gift within, just waiting to be discovered. It is up to the adults in their lives to help them discover it. The joy of reading can be an important step toward discovery!
Having a passion to serve children, in particular those in disadvantaged areas, Naomi started a book donation program which has to date, blessed over 350 children with a new copy of her debut book, “Johari The Great.” This book features a boy who is inspired by his teacher to use his imagination to write, and discovers that his superhero power is found in using his pencil! Because of its academic value and encouragement of reading and writing, donations made to literacy agencies were put to good use in helping students reach their literacy goals.
Naomi utilized the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform for her second children’s book, “Why Am I Here? A Child’s Book About Purpose.” This beautifully illustrated book carries a powerful message about hope and purpose. It teaches children about purpose and discovering the unique path and possibilities that await them in a future that can be bright and beautiful. Although it is a book that will inspire any child, Naomi felt led to give this book to children who reside in the inner-cities of her home state of Michigan namely, Detroit, Flint and Pontiac. Through the Kickstarter campaign her goal is garner support from people everywhere to purchase the book for their own children and/or donate toward her cause to give the books to schools and children in need to remind them that despite their circumstances, they too, have a purpose. Naomi has recently established a nonprofit organization, called Literacy and Diversity for All. The organization’s mission is to promote equity in literacy by supporting and assisting BIPOC authors and illustrators who write and illustrate children’s books with academic value and diverse representation, and distribute those books to schools, literacy organizations and children in diverse, underserved communities
